Introduction

Newcastle International Airport has opened an extended Security Search Area as part of its ongoing investment in enhancing the passenger experience. Designed to operate during peak periods, the new facility will enable the Airport to process over 30% more passengers per hour than in 2025.

Brief

Cklip Commercial Cleaning was appointed by Brims Construction to carry out the builders’ and sparkle cleans, together with external window cleaning, ensuring the completed facility was presented to the required standard ahead of handover.

The project required a comprehensive post-construction clean of the newly completed Security Search Area at Newcastle International Airport.

Working within a busy airport environment meant the cleaning programme had to be carefully coordinated around ongoing construction activity, other trades and strict site-access arrangements. The works also needed to be completed within a limited timeframe to support the planned opening of the facility.

Site Analysis & Planning

Before commencing the works, Cklip assessed the layout, newly installed finishes, security screening equipment, external glazing and remaining construction residues to determine the most appropriate cleaning methods and resources.

Our Project Manager worked closely with the Brims Construction site team to align the cleaning programme with the wider project schedule. As sections became available, our operatives worked systematically throughout the facility while accommodating other trades completing their final works.

The external glazing required carefully coordinated scaffold access. Planning was particularly important due to the secure airport environment, controlled access arrangements and fixed handover requirements.

Implementation: Works Carried Out

The builders’ clean focused on removing construction dust, debris, marks and residues from throughout the facility. The works covered extensive tiled floors and wall finishes, glazed partitions and balustrades, staircases, doors, windows, stainless-steel finishes, fixtures, fittings and other passenger-facing surfaces.

The Cklip team also carried out the detailed cleaning of all newly installed security screening equipment and associated tray-handling systems. The machines, conveyors, trays and passenger-contact surfaces were cleaned carefully using methods appropriate for the equipment.

This was followed by a detailed sparkle clean to remove any remaining dust, fingerprints, smears and minor marks. Attention was given to the tiled surfaces, glazing, stainless steel and security equipment, ensuring a clean and polished finish throughout. The external windows were cleaned from scaffolding, allowing the team to access the glazing safely and deliver a thorough and consistent finish.

Cklip subsequently returned to complete additional cleaning as further areas became available and the remaining construction works were finalised.
