Egger Factory

Egger Maintenance

Egger logoEgger is a chipboard manufacturing site located in Hexham, Northumberland, and is the largest manufacturing employer in the region. The company has 21 production sites globally and undertakes ongoing multimillion-pound investments to ensure it operates some of the most technologically advanced chipboard plants in Europe. The Hexham plant operates a closed loop production system from raw material delivery to raw board production, finishing processes and sales.

Cklip have a specially trained, dedicated team in operation at Egger year-round, located in the Conti Hall building with its Continuous Press, Forming Line and Sander in 24-hour production, and requiring daily attention to ensure waste wood dust remains at safe, operable levels.

Alongside daily cleaning, the Egger Hexham plant partially shuts down operations to carry out essential maintenance across the plant three times a year. This includes outsourcing for multiple specialist teams to service both buildings and machinery. All works must be delivered and completed without fail within a 7-day period, as it is critical that full production resumes on schedule.

Brief

During the Maintenance week of December 2023, Cklip was engaged to carry out works in the Dry Chip Preparation and Conti Hall locations of the plant, each containing multiple process areas, with complex machinery, pipework, and typically confined and/or high-level access. Tasks included both internal and external works, with a focus on removing dust, wood chips, and wood waste build up from usually inaccessible areas to minimise fire and health risks across the site.

Analysis: Site Visit

Given the specificities of the Egger Plant and unique requirements of the brief, several site visits were necessary prior to commencing works. Cklip’s project manager worked closely with the plant area manager to understand new and specialised cleaning processes, delivering in-depth RAMS and a strict schedule of works with in-built daily accountability in response.

The brief included the removal and replacement of 1,882 wood chip filled filter socks from external high-level machinery, the use of specialist onsite tools provided by Egger across the site, and a requirement for MEWP, scissor lift and forklift driving competency from the Cklip team selected by the project manager to deliver the works.

Implementation: Works Carried Out

After meticulous planning, a team of 12 were split into day and night shifts. Every team member received the necessary training to ensure their safety and competency in delivering their allotted tasks. Multi skilled groups were organised so the teams could support each other in completing on time.

Alongside the vehicles mentioned above, the team worked on scaffolding, high level walkways accessed by enclosed ladders, and shutdown machinery (with specific clearance). Specialist tools used included high powered airline hoses and filter-sock removal kits.

Cklip’s project manager worked as flexibly as possible to be available to support the teams, monitor the schedule delivery, and feedback regularly to the plant area manager. Due to this exceptional attention to detail, forward planning, and ongoing management, the Cklip team was able to complete all allotted tasks 2 days ahead of schedule.

Review: Hand Over

While the Egger Plant is a very demanding environment, the team delivered an exceptional standard of work throughout the maintenance period, and despite having time to spare, the client was more than satisfied and happy to sign off on all aspects of the brief without further attention.
